When we first got to Chennai as a joke (I’m pretty sure it was a joke.. because the men sitting round us and the chefs were pissing themselves) we were served a paper roast or Dosaf the size of our table!! Dosaf (a paper thin lentil flour pancake, a southern traditional food) normal are big.. but I’m pretty sure they aren’t that big!
Wow .. so I am stuffed!
I just had the strangest of flash back just now, to when I was 19 and living in Melbourne. We went to a all you can eat joint, after not eating properly for a few days we unsurprisingly stuffed our faces and power chucking all the way home..
..accept today I didn’t do the later and I’ve eaten really really well for all the days I’ve lived in India..
I just LOVE the stodgyness of India food!!
Man you guys don’t understand..
There are these deep fried bubble Roti things called Buri that I love.. but then there are these other amazingly tasti things called Paratha.. ahhh so good, a kind of spicy potato filling in a Roti-chennai kid of fried crispy outer.. I’m telling you they have absolutely nothing on Japatas and Somosas.. you can just laugh at Popadoms compared to Paratha.. soooo good.
I was on vegetarian Tali meals up until a few days ago when I was literally dreaming about Chicken Tika and Garlic nans.. so I eventually gave in the other day with a creamy coriander and cashewnut Paneer curry (cheese-tofu kind of stuff) with a Cheese Nan.. so good.
I’m pretty sure I have OD’d on Mangos over the last few days also. I have fresh mango on my cereal, I have Mango Lassi’s like- all the time (I'm turing into the American girls..) and there is this amazing stuff called Mazza which comes in a recycled bottle ...
Yeah so I'm loving the mango session!
..But Mangos’ aren’t the half of it when it comes to fruit around these parts.. the people I’ i'm staying with go to the fresh fruit market every morning, so there are juicy Pomigranietes, Guavas, the sweetest Pineapples I think I’ve ever tasted and yummy as sweet fruit.. that I don’t actually know the names of...
And that‘s not even mentioning the curd types of yogurt that you can get (in clay pots) for your cereal (mm with honey drizzled over it). They come in variations of sweetness .. I love the thick butterscotch one.. it taste just like a India sweet Vari.. a deep fried spicy donut kind of gig, soaked in a syrup all day long.. AMAZING.. theres is a even a white cream cheese variation with rose water syrup.. oo ahhh
Which naturally brings me to the Indian sweets (famous in Kolkata especially). OK so I’m actually not doing a very good job of getting through each on of them (there are soooo many!)- no wonder the the ladies have that gap between their blouses and their sari to expand..
There are pistachio variations, Baddarn Barfi variations (a soft fudge with eatable silver foil)-they look the best -but the Sandesh (Fruit and nuts) and the Mishtidhoi (curd and palm sugar) sure do taste the best.. yes sir ree.
Yeah so while living in India is a tad hard, eating sure isn't!
